The Carolina Hurricanes were founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers and played in the WHA. They joined the NHL in 1979 and did not move to Carolina until 1997. The Hurricanes won one Stanley Cup in 2006 against the Oilers. They play home games at RBC Center, which opened in 1999 and holds 18,000 people.
