Helen Folasade Adu, OBE (born January 16, 1959), better known as Sade, is a British songwriter, composer and producer. She first achieved success in the 1980s, as a front-woman and lead singer of the popular Grammy and Brit English group Sade.
While in college, she joined a soul group, Pride, in which she sings the chorus. Her performance as a soloist with the song “Smooth Operator” is what attracted the attention of record companies and in 1983 signed a solo contract with Epic Records she took along three members of the band, Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale and Paul Denman, Sade and her group produced the first of a series of successful albums. Her debut album Diamond Life in 1984. She is the most successful female solo artist in British history, having sold over 110 million albums worldwide
In 2002, she appeared on Red Hot Organization Red Hot and Riot, a compilation CD in tribute to the music of her fellow Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. She has recorded a remix of her single, “by your side”, and was billed as co-producer.
